マルセル・ブシェ（Marcel Boucher）
マルセル・ブシェは、アメリカのコスチュームジュエリーの歴史において独自の地位を占めるデザイナーです。1898年にパリで生まれたブシェは、金細工師として訓練を受けた後、アメリカに移住し、ニューヨークのカルティエでデザイナーとして腕を磨きました。1937年に独立してMarcel Boucher & Cieを設立し、フランス高級ジュエリーの洗練さをコスチュームジュエリーの世界に持ち込むことを使命としました。その作品は精緻な石のセッティング、優雅な金属加工、そしてカルティエ仕込みの気品によって、発表当初から際立った存在感を放っていました。ブシェ自身、自分の作品は本物の宝石ジュエリーと見分けがつかないほどでなければならないと語っており、その言葉通りの完成度を実現しました。

Marcel Boucher occupies a singular place in the history of American costume jewelry. Born in Paris in 1898, Boucher trained as a goldsmith before emigrating to the United States, where he worked as a designer at Cartier in New York. In 1937 he struck out on his own, founding Marcel Boucher & Cie with a mission to bring the refinement of fine French jewelry to the costume market. His work was immediately distinguished by its exceptional craftsmanship — precise stone setting, elegant metalwork, and a sophistication that reflected his Cartier training. Boucher himself famously insisted that his pieces be indistinguishable from fine jewelry at a glance, and he largely succeeded.
Boucher's designs moved fluidly through the major movements of his era — Art Deco geometry, naturalistic florals, whimsical figural brooches, and the glamorous rhinestone confections of the 1950s. His signature "MB" mark, later accompanied by a shepherd's crook (houlette), is among the most sought-after hallmarks in vintage costume jewelry collecting. Pieces from his 1940s and 1950s output in particular command strong prices today, prized for their weight, complexity of design, and the quality of the Austrian and Czech crystals he favored. Boucher retired in 1970 and passed away in 1976, leaving behind a body of work that sits comfortably alongside Trifari and Haskell in the upper tier of American costume jewelry.
