クリスチャン・ディオールはフランス・ノルマンディー地方のグランヴィルに生まれ、幼い頃から外交官を望む家族の期待よりも芸術への情熱を優先しました。1928年に小さなアートギャラリーを開き、ファッションスケッチの販売も手がけた後、フランス一の富豪マルセル・ブサックの目に留まります。既存のブランドの再建を断り、自らの名を冠したメゾンの設立にこだわったディオールは、1946年12月8日、ブサックの支援を受けてディオールを創設しました。
1947年2月に発表されたデビューコレクションは「ニュールック」として知られ、戦時中の質素な箱型シルエットとは対照的な、豊かなボリュームとウエストを強調したラインが世界を魅了しました。「新しい」と称されながらも、そのデザインはエドワード朝時代の優雅な女性らしさを巧みに取り入れ、1930年代後半からオートクチュールで静かに育まれてきたトレンドを見事に結晶化させたものでした。
Christian Dior was born in Granville, Normandy, France, and from an early age showed more interest in art than the diplomatic career his family had envisioned for him. He opened a small art gallery in 1928 and later sold fashion sketches before catching the attention of Marcel Boussac, the wealthiest man in France. Rather than revive an existing fashion house, Dior insisted on launching under his own name, founding his maison on December 8, 1946 with Boussac's backing.
His debut collection, presented in February 1947, became known as the "New Look" — voluptuous, full-skirted silhouettes that stood in striking contrast to the boxy, fabric-conserving styles of the wartime years. Though called new, the designs drew elegantly from Edwardian-era femininity, crystallizing trends that had been quietly building in haute couture since the late 1930s.
